Causes Of Mental Illness

mental-illness

It isn’t possible to pinpoint every single mental illness to one single cause, but after extensive research on mental health, a lot of clarity has been added to the unclear subject which is said to be the cause of environmental, psychological and biological characteristics.

A very common element which is said to cause mental illness is the unusual functioning of nerve cell circuits which connect to various regions in the brain. In order to make the communication between the nerve cells more efficient, the neurotransmitters used is altered.

Let us look at some of the biological characteristics that are responsible for the degradation of mental health.

1.      Infections

It is commonly known that diseases that affect the brain can induce mental illness or even push pre-existing symptoms which will, as a result, cause brain damage. A very good example for this is the fact that a condition known as paediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder is known to cause OCD as well as other mental disorders among children. Pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder is linked with a bacteria called Streptococcus.

2.      Heredity

Mental illness can, in most cases, be induced through genetics which means if a family member has a history with mental illness, then the chances of someone else in said family contracting a mental disorder is highly likely. This is mainly due to the fact that the vulnerabilities are passed through genetics.

3.      Damage to the brain in the prenatal stage

There are studies that prove that people who suffered from a brain trauma when they were in their fetal stage can later materialize in the form of mental illnesses such as autism. The shock in the fetal stage can be in the form of a lack of oxygen or even damage to the brain in general.

The causes we have discussed above are of the biological kind, and as such, there are a plethora of other factors that need to be discussed that are beyond the scope of this article.

Nevertheless, it is important to show support and concern whenever a friend or a loved one is showing signs of mental illness such as excessive guilt, worries, a feeling of being sad or worn down, low energy, mood wings which are highly uncommon or uncharacteristic to the person or even drug/alcohol abuse.

If a close friend or a loved one is showing signs of any of the above symptoms, make sure they are given access to psychiatric care as soon as possible.
